” 真鍮になぜこだわるのか？ "


Why do we value the use of brass?

 

 

" 電球の誕生 "
 

今から130年以上前の1890年代　世間に電球というものが普及し始めました。

その当初の電球は明るさの種類が無く、ろうそくの灯かりのようなものだったようです。

そのために明るさが必要な場所には多数の電球を使用した照明器具が使われ、街やお店、家庭の食卓を照らしました。
昔の資料では24灯や36灯という街灯も存在していたようです。

※写真のソケットは、アメリカ買付の道中に偶然出会った100年以上前に作られた真鍮製のソケット。



"The birth of the light bulb"

In the 1890s, more than 130 years ago, electric light bulbs began to become popular in society.

The original bulbs did not have a classification of brightness variations. It seemed like the light of a candle.

For this purpose, lighting fixtures that used a large number of light bulbs were used where brightness was needed, illuminating streets, shops, and dining tables at home.

According to old documents, there seemed to be a street lamp with 24 or 36 lights.


 

 

” 照明を作りたい "


我々は照明をデザインし、ひとつひとつ製造して販売しています。

元々照明を作り始めたきっかけは、海外を訪れる度に海外と日本の灯かりの使い方や灯りに対する考え方の違いをひしひしと感じ、暖かい色の灯かりを灯す照明器具を使いたい。

選べるように作りだしたいという想いから照明製作の一歩が始まりました。2010年4月ごろでした。

"The idea of making light fixtures"

The lighting fixtures we are selling are designed by us and manufacture one by one.

Every time I traveled abroad, I became acutely aware of the disparities between how light is used and perceived in Japan and other countries, which inspired me to begin creating lighting. Warm light-emitting lighting fixtures are what I wish to employ.

The initial stage of lighting creation was motivated by the goal to produce lighting fixtures that could be selected. It was sometime in April of 2010.

 

 

 

 

” １００年耐える電化製品 ”

 

電球が世に誕生したとされる100年以上前、そのころ使われた照明器具は装飾が華やかで機能性も持たせたものが多く、素材も金属や木材が主流でした。

木材よりも強くて、金属の中でも柔らかく、加工がしやすかった真鍮（しんちゅう/BRASS）は現存する100年前の照明器具にも素材としてよく見られます。

100年前に作られた照明器具の良いところを取り入れ、現代の技術と環境への負荷を考えた時に、どうせ作るなら後世に受け継げるような照明器具を作りたいと、100年前のデザインや素材という先人の知恵を借り、我々は新たなVINTAGE（ヴィンテージ）と成り得るゼロからではないイチから作るプロダクトを生み出し始めたのです。
 


"Electronics that have a 100-year service life."

More than 100 years ago, when the light bulb was invented, the lighting fixtures used at that time were often ornate in terms of decoration and function, and the main materials used were metal and wood.

Brass is stronger than wood, softer than metal, and easy to work with, and is also the main material used in lighting fixtures that existed more than 100 years ago.

Combining the advantages of lighting fixtures made in 100 years ago, and taking into account modern technology and environmental impact, we want to create lighting fixtures that can be passed on to future generations.

By drawing on the wisdom of our predecessors 100 years ago in terms of design and materials, we set out to produce products that could become new VINTAGE, not from scratch, but from 1.


 

 

 " 古き良き真鍮部品のデザイン "


真鍮の良いところは、錆が発生しにくいため朽ちてかない、要は廃棄物になりにくいという部分。

その特性を生かして船舶照明や海辺の外灯などにも使用される金属として重宝されています。

ただ日本では工芸品のような削り出しの真鍮部品は見つかりますが、明治のお屋敷で使われたような「型からおこしたデザイン」のシャンデリア部品などは見つける事が出来ませんでした。




The benefit of brass is that it does not rust easily, making it less likely to become waste.

"Design of good old brass parts."

It is valued as a metal, using its properties for marine lighting and seaside outdoor lights. In Japan, brass parts carved like crafts can be found, but chandelier parts that are "cast from molds", like Meiji-era mansions, cannot be found.

 

 

 

 

 

" 砂漠の中のオアシス "


照明を作りたい、でも欲しい部品が手に入らないという状況に悩みながら、アメリカの街の電気屋に何年も通い、情報収集を続けました。

探しはじめてから数年後、資料で見たことのあった「昔ながらの素敵なデザイン」で「真鍮素材」のパーツを100年以上作り続けている会社にたどり着きます。

2010年の事なので、世間では十分にインターネットが普及していましたが、古くから存在するアメリカ企業はまだまだアナログ体制、しかも直接渡米して現地調査できるのはせいぜい年2回でした。

インターネットで調べても欲しい情報が見つけられず、数年が経過した後だったので、この部品メーカーとの出会いは砂漠の中のオアシスに出会ったような感覚だったのです。
 


"An oasis in the desert"

I wanted to make lighting fixtures but couldn't get the parts I needed, so I have spent years visiting electrical stores in cities in the United States to gather information.

After starting my search for a few years, I finally found the company I was looking for which was in a document I read about this company that has been using "brass material" to make parts with "traditional and cute designs" for more than 100 years. 

Since 2010, the Internet has established a foothold in society, but American companies with long history still adhere to traditional business model, and we can only visit the United States for on-site inspections at most twice a year.

After several years, we could not find the information, even searching the internet, so meeting this parts manufacturer felt like finding an oasis in the desert.



 

　
　
“ 金属の数年後の表情 "


現在ではアメリカにある部品会社の数社から材料を仕入れ、シンプルな中にも細部にこだわったオリジナル照明を組み上げています。

デザインと素材さえ固まれば、センチとインチなどのサイズ規格の相違や国の法律問題も軽々と乗り越えて、夢に見るほどの熱い思いの中、選りすぐった金属部品たち。


"Metal Appearance after a few years"

Currently, we source materials from several parts companies in the United States, and the original lighting is assembled with attention to detail while maintaining simplicity.

Once the design and materials have been decided, differences in size standards such as centimeters and inches, and legal issues in various countries, can be easily overcome. Choosing metal parts with such a strong passion felt like a dream.





そのような部品を手に、どのような表情（表面の見え方）が一番美しいか、どうしたら経年後も大切にされるものに昇華できるのかを弊社の職人たちは常に考えています。

真鍮の表面にはなるべくクリアコーティングをせず、必要な部品には手作業の研磨で絶妙なヘアライン（細かいキズ）を付け、より美しい表情に仕上げます。
 


With these parts, our craftsmen always consider what looks the most beautiful and how to elevate them to be cherished years later.

The brass surface is as uncoated as possible, and the necessary parts are polished by hand to create a delicate hairline (fine scratches) for a more beautiful finish.

真鍮という、上質な木材と同じように美しく経年変化を遂げる金属。磨けば艶と奥行きを出し、経年で深みをだす。

「真鍮を育てる」感覚で美しくも力強い金属の変化を楽しんで頂けたら、真鍮を愛する我々も冥利に尽きるというものです。
